Name Changing 101

There is no law that says you have to get a new name; it's a matter of personal choice. Since you can't start the paperwork until after your wedding, make honeymoon reservations in your maiden name. When you return, wait for the copy of your marriage license. Be patient; it may take a few weeks or months to get the copy.

Driver's License, Vehicle Titles and Registration and Voter Registration

Secretary of State Branch Office

If you have a valid driver's license or personal ID card, you will need proof of your name change, such as a marriage certificate. There is a fee and you will have to take a new photo. If your driver's license is due to expire, you may want to renew it early. Call your branch office or visit www.michigan.gov.

Social Security Card

Social Security Commission

You will need identification showing your old name and your new name, such as a marriage certificate. If you were not born in the United States, you also will need proof of your US citizenship or that you are a legal US resident. Call (800) 772.1213 or visit www.socialsecurity.gov.

Passport

Local County Clerk or Post Office

If you have a valid passport, you must fill out an amendment form and send it to the passport agency with a certified copy of your marriage license. You will find these forms at either your local County Clerk's or Post Office.

To obtain your marriage license in West Michigan, bring:

  • Certified copy of birth certificate for both applicants (which will need to include: Age and date of birth, birthplace city & state, parents' full names including mother's maiden name and state or country in which parents were born.)
  • Driver's license for both applicants.
  • $20 cash or money order.
  • $30 cash or money order for out-of-state residents.
  • Copy of judgment of divorce if previous marriage was terminated by divorce.
  • Copy of death record if previous marriage was terminated by death.

Note: There is a three day waiting period for the license, after applying, and your marriage must take place within 33 days from date of application.
